Books that Rewired my Brain in the Best Way

Updated: Mar 13

I didn’t set out to read books that would change my life.

I was mostly just trying to get through the day with a little more ease. I wanted something entertaining and educational to listen to while on long road trips. A little less self-criticism. A little more understanding of how my brain actually works.

Somewhere along the way, a handful of books quietly shifted things for me. Not in a dramatic, overnight way. More like they loosened knots I didn’t realize I’d been carrying.

These are the ones that stuck.

Books That Changed My Life

Atomic Habits by James Clear

This book helped me stop beating myself up for not being “disciplined.”

For a long time, I thought the problem was me. I just needed more willpower, more consistency, and more grit. What this book showed me instead was that tiny shifts matter. Micro habits count. Systems matter more than motivation.

It was a relief to realize my ADHD brain isn’t broken. I just need structures that actually fit how I function.

Once I stopped trying to force myself into systems that weren’t designed for me, everything got easier. Not perfect. But kinder. And that made all the difference.

ADHD for Smart Ass Women by Tracy Otsuka

Reading this felt like someone finally handed me the manual for my brain.

Every chapter had me nodding along like, “Yep, that’s me.” It helped me understand how to work with my wiring instead of constantly fighting it.

More than anything, it replaced shame with understanding. And that’s huge.

Joyful by Ingrid Fetell Lee

This book validated my whole personality.

It helped me realize why bright colors, playful details, and little sparks of magic make life feel easier for me. It reminded me that joy is not fluff. It’s a design strategy and a life choice.

It changed how I think about spaces and why certain environments feel supportive while others feel draining.

The Power of Colors by Noah Goldhirsh

This was the one that made it click even deeper.

This book opened my eyes to why certain colors ground me and others spark energy. It changed how I dress, how I decorate, and how I create spaces that are welcoming, supportive, and bring joy.

I started noticing color the way you notice music once someone teaches you how to listen. Like… oh, that’s why I feel calm here. That’s why this outfit feels like a boost. That’s why some spaces feel instantly safe while others feel like my brain can’t settle.

It gave me language for things I already felt, and it made me way more intentional about how I build environments, both at home and in the spaces I create for others.

Unbound by Kasia Urbaniak

A total reset on power and communication.

This book helped me rebuild boundaries, speak with more clarity, and stop giving away my energy. I wish I had read it years ago.

It’s one of those reads that makes you sit up straighter. Not in a performative way. In a “wait, I’m allowed to take up space” way.

Joy Seeker by Shannon Kaiser

This book got me through some chaotic experiences.

One line in particular stayed with me: “When things seem to be falling apart, they are actually falling into place.”

It helped me replace worry with curiosity and wonder. That shift sounds small, but it honestly changed how I move through my days.

The Book of Joy by the Dalai Lama and Desmond Tutu

I’ve read this one more times than I can count.

It reminded me that joy and struggle can exist at the same time. It helped me slow down, breathe, and look for small moments that make life feel lighter.

A grounding read for anxious brains and overwhelmed business owners. It’s one I return to when I need perspective.

Honorable Mentions

These have each been helpful in different seasons:

  • Think Like a Monk by Jay Shetty

  • Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert

  • Grit by Angela Duckworth

  • You Are a Badass by Jen Sincero

  • The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck by Mark Manson

  • And really any book by Brené Brown

How I Actually Read

I rarely sit down long enough to read physical books. Let’s be real.

Audiobooks and e-books have been my favorite thing over the last few years. I listen while I drive, walk, clean, run errands, or do the kind of mindless tasks that actually help my brain focus.

If you haven’t already downloaded the library Libby app, I highly recommend it. It’s saved me a ridiculous amount of money and makes reading feel doable.

These books didn’t “fix” me. They didn’t need to.

They helped me understand myself better. And that made running a business, navigating ADHD, and finding joy feel a whole lot more doable.

If you’ve read any of these, I’d love to know what landed for you. And if you have recommendations, please send them my way. I’m always building the next list.

Conclusion

In conclusion, these books have been more than just words on a page. They’ve been companions on my journey. They’ve guided me through challenges and celebrated my victories.

I hope you find your own transformative reads. And remember, it’s all about the journey, not just the destination. Happy reading!
